Hooked on REWORK_http://www.submarinechannel.com/wp-content/uploads/bfi_thumb/glass-iPad-Silver-Alert-comp-2048x1536-2to8lmslgg79nbgcgiwqh6.jpg
What did I do last Christmas? I was totally hooked on an iPad app called REWORK_ . And so were my little nieces. What is it?
Ease into ithttp://www.submarinechannel.com/wp-content/uploads/bfi_thumb/glass-iPad-Glass-Machine-2to8liwdddofhtbbio6eq2.jpg
To ease yourself into the complexity of those characteristic oscillations and repetitions, set all the factors like speed and different tones in the Glass Machine to minimum. Then gradually raise them bit by bit and see how the most complex music is actually based on very basic algorithms.
Disguised as a bonus feature, the Glass Machine should be the main attraction! Two interactive circles on the interface explain crystal clear the building blocks of Glass’ music. It’s not so much a tool with which you can ‘rework’ your own Glass piece, moreover it fosters real understanding of this music through involvement.
Beauty and simplicityhttp://www.submarinechannel.com/wp-content/uploads/bfi_thumb/glass-iPad-Nosaj-Thing-comp-2048x1536-2to8kklhni60skjbd6pekq.jpg
This interaction is of such beauty and simplicity, that I, as well as my three year old niece couldn’t keep our sweaty fists away from it. And I haven’t event mentioned the best feature! And that’s the...
Every track has it’s own graphic video. You don’t necessarily need to interact with it to enjoy the beautiful shapes, lines, dots and color shades as they bounce, float or shift shape at the beat of the song. But when you do want to interact, the graphics will move very organically to the touch of your fingers.
Music, video and interaction support and complement each other. Musical high light of the album is Dan Deacon’s remix of Philip Glass’ ‘Alight Spiral Snip’. With its many wonderful oscillations and echos, it’s hypnotizing just like the best work of Terry Riley would, another contemporary minimalist like Philip Glass.
While working on the Philip Glass’ remixes, Glass and Beck did right to ask Scott Snibbe, de maker of Björk’s Biophilia album app. Early in his career, Snibbe made interactive art installations, but he switched to mobile apps, once those were commercially available on a large scale. No wonder that REWORK_ is best described as art.
A dream collaborationhttp://www.submarinechannel.com/wp-content/uploads/bfi_thumb/glass-beck-2to8jl5wczux2w1gqwkhze.jpg
The project is a dream collaboration between the composer Philip Glass, musician Beck and interaction designer Scott Snibbe. At Submarine Channel, we are all huge fans of all of these guys separately, but who would’ve thought that putting them together would result in such an amazing experience?
Philip Glass experience for and by youhttp://www.submarinechannel.com/wp-content/uploads/bfi_thumb/glass-main-2to8h7q061ev9wgmtuummi.png
REWORK_ is eleven brilliant Philip Glass remixes by amongst others Dan Deacon, Beck and Amon Tobin. Each song has its own unique interactive graphic experience which lets you become the artist. You can even make your own Philip Glass remix with the built in ‘Glass machine’.
Costing ten dollars, it’s a pricey app. But hello, you (and your kids) will be the proud owner and manipulator of the best possible combination of music, art and interaction of today.
