DSLR Short Filmed With ‘dolly’ on Chopsticks

Shot in South Korea on a Canon 7D, two English teachers Benjamin Tucker and Myles Lewando created the suspenseful short “Quickly, Go” that looks like a scene from some hip/slick Asian action flick. “This was all done in the mornings and weekends over a period of three months,” explains Lewando in an email. “For the empty subway shots…
we went extremely early in the mornings to avoid crowds, like 5AM. We were pretty exhausted at school on those days!” The two directors made the short in true DIY spirit, building their own steadicam using wood and “a complex counterbalance system comprised of about a hundred tiny magnets and water-bottles.” For the moving ‘dolly’ shots in the subway they used a tripod with wooden chopsticks under each foot to make it slide! How resourceful!

“All audio was done in post-production. We used online royalty free files, like freesound.org. It turned out to be more difficult to find the exact audio we were looking for, so we invested in a Zoom H4N to capture additional audio.”
