Top 5 Of Our Favorite Things: Pop Culture Blogs
We heard the chaps over at the Weblog Awards had counted their 933,022 votes in 48 categories (Best Military Blog and Best Pet Blog included) so we rushed post-haste to check the results for Best Culture Blog. And the winner is…. The Cool Hunter! Although we’re very much in agreement with the win, we’re frankly mystified by some of the other nominees in this category. To vent our mystification, we’ve come up with our own top five culture blogs; sites we visit regularly for fresh, original babble about… well, culture, that boast pretty design to boot.
1. Lost at E Minor
So plentiful is this gem of a rich-media pop culture blog, that you’ll be showered with new stuff with a mere click of the “Refresh” button. Daily updates on no less than fifteen topics, and a visual style that provides instant inspiration will have you subscribing to the RSS feed in a jiffy.
2. Kitsune Noir
Update: Kitsune Noir is no more.
Run by lone L.A-based blogger Bobby Solomon, KN always hit the spot with fashion, art and design updates accompanied by whimsy image selections. Bobby knew the way to our hearts was with downloadable Mixtapes and ravishing desktop wallpapers, and had us hooked, lined and sinkered.
3. Booooooom
The sheer amount of low-brow brilliance featured daily on this site will either (a) inspire you or (b) give you an inferiority complex as you ask yourself “just how many uber-talented people are there in this cut-throat world of ours?” Channeling onto our screens from fair Vancouver town, this is a veritable treasure trove of mainly art and photography news.
4. Boingboing
An original from the Internet Stone Age of 1995, Boingboing is the Wired of the subculture world – and in fact shares many of its contributing writers. Their criteria (“wonderful things” apparently) is refreshingly limitless, and yet they make every item seem like esssential reading… Its affiliates, BB Gadgets, BB TV and the super-geeky BB Offworld offer more targeted, but equally top-notch news.
5. Josh Spear
Always one step ahead, Mr Spear – a fierce lobbyist for the power of the blog – never disappoints with his ever-fresh content and genial writing style. Tapped into all the right information streams, he brings us daily updates on a huge range of topics and is your one-stop source for specialist design info (product, architecture, graphic – the works).
