  • Youth Suicide Fantasy and Venereal Disease

    by A/V Geeks

We recently saw an episode from the BBC documentary series The Thirties in Colour. It showed amazing, extremely rare footage from Nazi-Germany in colour. The material was shot by amateurs just before World War II which made it a very eerie experience: scenes of German civilians going about their lives in streets filled with swastikas.

Hungry for more remarkable archive material we searched the Internet Archive (that grand collection of moving images, offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical footage that exist in digital format) and came across A/V Geeks. The A/V Geeks maintain an archive of over 20,000 16mm educational and industrial films. They show the films across the U.S. and make films available on DVD and online at YouTube, Google Video and the Internet Archive. They sell almost 150 different DVDs, categorized by theme. These compilations have great titles like "Youth Suicide Fantasy - Does Their Music Make Them Do It?" or "Atomic Age Classics Vol 4: Venereal Disease and You".

  • The Graveyard

    by Tale of Tales

Tale of Tales is Auriea Harvey and Michal Samyn's games development studio. The couple, both award-winning designers in their own right, met online years ago and fell in love. Since then, the duo have been operating on the forefront of independent game design. Their latest: The Graveyard is actually? more like a painting of a grave yard you can explore, slowly. Once inside this painting you take on the character of an old lady. The gameplay is simple. You can walk around, sit on a bench, and listen to a song all the while contemplating the tomb stones surrounding you. The makers, Harvey and Samyn, describe it as real-time poetry - an attempt to tell a story without words. It brings the usually fast paced interactivity of games to a near halt, but even the minimal interactivity here is enough to forge an emotional bond between character and player. Much criticism has been posted about the graphics, the intention and the significance of this cross-over attempt, some saying that the presumptuous claim to art is over the top, others complaining about poor animation and relevance. Harvey and Samyn have explored the potential of interactive media. For the medium to grow and mature, designers need to have the courage to abandon existing (game) formats and explore new types of interaction, emotion and story line.

  • Neave TV

    by Paul Neave

I would not call this a site for soar eyes. It does, however, help get your mind off things and make light of a grey day. While a big caption reads "Have your self a break", I think you will soon find your self having a whole afternoon off, sifting through short films, technology clips, music vids and the self-proclaimed "weird" section. With creative catch phrases in the upper left corner, such as "You look lovely today, by the way" or "May contain scenes of visual nature", and a creative transition between vids, this site just oozes fun. You will be amazed at what you will find here, it's like a really cool treasure box filled with media goodies. Just as Neave claims, it's like television, but nicer. So, please, click here to meet our new and very cool friend!

  • Scopitones

Once described as a cross between a jukebox and a TV, a Scopitone provided thousands with entertainment during the sixties. A real blast from the past, this site is jam-packed with swinging music and reminiscent music videos from good old times gone by. I am not old enough to remember these times, you might not be either. But it is wonderful to see such classic stuff on the internet. The site it self could use a bit of a touch-up, still, their content is really remarkable, providing links to wikipedia info pages, a shop, a list of artists, history and of course the opportunity to watch original Scopitones 16 mm films.

  • Have Money Will Vlog

Have Money Will Vlog is a really cool community driven way to finance interesting vlog projects. This comes down to being a piggy bank of sorts, accessible to those with good ideas and big efforts. The intention is that people submit their projects and HAVE MONEY acts as a promoter. The results are community raised funds for some wonderful vlogs that range from the culturally inclined to the environmentally friendly with everything in-between. Check out "Project Pedal" for an esteem building journey or the "Colombia Migration Project" about the effects of globalization on the lives of people in Colombia. Don't you just feel like supporting a vlog initiative today?

  • Victor Taba

Now here's a trippy site. The generative, changing Flash animations literally swirl until your nauseous and the music has a strange, repetitive quality. Very "James Patterson" (Presstube.com). It will throw you for a loop. The site is bizarre, organic and mechanical all at the same time. On top of that, it has a very strong trance inducing element. Be careful you don't become cross-eyed visiting Voctor Taba.

  • Bendito Machine

    by Jossie Malis

The style of this website could be described as reflecting traits of the Wayang puppet theatre of Indonesia, using just black shadow figures as strange and grim protagonists. Other influences seem to range form Aztec designs to Islamic motifs. But on a whole the animations are very South American and conjure up the dark feel of a world that seems to embrace death. This could be a faithful yet grim portrait of humanity as we know it, with underlying references to current topics such as religious strife. The soundtrack is ingenious. But what really makes this website stand out is the creativity, the life and the passion that went into making it. It is a one-man show, produced by Jossie Malis, who was born in Peru, moved to Chile and is presently located in Barcelona. Worth a visit!

  • A Swarm of Angels

    by Matt Hanson

Bigger media has always been in the hands of the big bosses and so the evil movie industry has managed to keep the power by protecting its production. Not anymore! You cant control media, so, we should all participate in remixing, says Matt Hanson who is a film futurist, director, digital film pioneer, visionary and much more. He also leads the swarm. A Swarm Of Angels that is; a project that mobilizes the global community to produce a one million pound open source feature film. After this not-so-small-feat has been achieved it will be given away. To one million people. If the project succeeds Hanson will have redefined film making methods. Traditional media relied heavily on the hierarchical approach of big bosses calling the shots. New media and the Internet, however, have more of a bottom-up approach, providing user-generated-content. Now these two worlds could come together in perfect symbioses. Lets just hope creativity does not turn into compromise.

  • Learning To Love You More

by Miranda July & Harrell Fletcher

"Learning To Love You More" is another one of Miranda July's projects. July is the artist who stepped into the mainstream limelight with her 2005 film hit 'Me and You and Everyone We Know'. Together with Harrell Fletcher she set up a website that invites you to do a creative assignment. There are 57 to choose from. You could for instance: 9. Draw a constellation from someone's freckles; 53. Give advice to yourself in the past; 50. Take a flash photo under your bed; or 21. Sculpt a bust of Steve. There are more than 25 Steves now! But there's more. By submitting your work, you're contributing to a gesamtkunstwerk, which means that your creative endeavour might even get published in a book or exhibited in a show. Not bad, for artworks based on someone else's idea.
