Pause – Freezing Music Video Culture

Pause – Freezing Music Video Culture is the first edition of our curated music video platform. Built in 2002, it was replaced by 2Pause in 2009.

A spin-off of the Exploding Cinema 2002 program curated by Submarine founder Femke Wolting for the 31st International Film Festival Rotterdam, Pause is an online jukebox introducing the web audience to a world of amazing music videos. Directing music videos has a very prolific playground for developing new styles and editing techniques. The music video industry has proven to be an extraordinary springboard for many of today’s most acclaimed film directors. David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Jonathan Glazer, Michel Gondry, Baz Luhrmann, P.T. Anderson are just a few of those pioneers who set the agenda for directing feature films right from the music videos’ trench.

Pause intends to pay tribute to the groundbreaking nature of music videos by representing a selection of startling music videos and interviews with directors of the likes of Spike Jonze, Roman Coppola, W.I.Z., Floria Sigismondi, H5, Shynola, Mike Mills, and many others.
