Submarine Channel

Minimovie

Crass

This is the very first Minimovie Submarine Channel ever produced, and it dates back to 2006. As an alternative to the “traditional” trailer, director Alexander Oey used footage from the doc to create two music videos for Crass songs, with the lyrics of the songs superimposed on the visuals. And to great effect. Both videos went viral on YouTube, generating over 180,000 views and a lot of comments from Crass fans to date.

The Story

The anarchist punk band Crass was very different from their contemporaries. The Sex Pistols and The Clash sold their souls to big record labels, whereas Crass stayed true to their anti-corporate ideals. Crass still exists today as a commune just outside of London named ‘Dial House’- a safe haven for those individuals of principle who still live by the old punk slogan ‘Do it yourself’.

About Alexander Oey

Alexander Oey (1960) has directed a large number of documentaries, mainly for the Dutch networks VPRO and NPS, such as ‘My Life as a Terrorist: The Story of Hans – Joachim Klein’ (2005), ‘Euro-Islam according to Tariq Ramadan’ (2005),’Bijlmer the Rough Guid’ (2003) and ‘Jeff Wall’ (1999).
