ABOUT
To kick off the first edition of Submarine Channel Live 2012, we’re diving straight into the brave new world of motion comics. This digital, time-based incarnation of the traditional comic book seems to be taking the comic world by storm. Is this the end of the comic book era? We don’t pretend to have the answer. What we do know is that we love the hybrid mutant that is the motion comic. Which is why we made one ourselves: The Art of Pho.

The interactive motion comic The Art of Pho is based on the graphic novel by British illustrator Julian Hanshaw. Produced by yours truly, it was made into an 8-episode web series by animation director Lois van Baarle. Sub Live is the premiere of the theatrical version of The Art of Pho and will include a post-screening Q&A with Julian Hanshaw, who’s flying in from London, and Lois van Baarle.

Last but not least, we’ll showcase a compilation program featuring episodes from five of the best, boldest and most beautiful motion comics made over the course of the short history of the genre — from 2000 to present-day.

MOTION COMICS – The Future of Comics?

De eerste Sub Live van 2012 staat helemaal in het teken van de motion comic. De ontwikkeling van deze digitale variant op het gedrukte beeldverhaal is de laatste jaren in een stroomversnelling geraakt. Submarine Channel draagt zelf een steentje bij met de release van The Art of Pho – een splinternieuwe interactieve graphic novel van Nederlandse bodem.

The Art of Pho is een surrealistisch en aangrijpend verhaal over Little Blue en zijn vrienden in Vietnam. In de hectische hoofdstad Ho Chi Minh City wordt Little Blue ingewijd in de kunst van het bereiden van ‘Pho’ – Vietnam’s nationale noodlegerecht. The Art of Pho is een aangrijpend verhaal over vriendschap, liefde en de zoektocht naar je roots.

The Art of Pho is gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van de Britse illustrator Julian Hanshaw en werd door Submarine Channel bewerkt tot een 8-delige interactieve web comic o.l.v. de Nederlandse animatie-regisseur Lois van Baarle. Op Sub Live de premiere van de theaterversie van The Art of Pho, gevolgd door een Q&A met Lois en Julian.

Verder kijken we naar een compilatieprogramma met afleveringen van de vijf beste, mooiste, meest gedurfde motion comics die zijn verschenen vanaf 2000 tot nu.
