Attention all soldiers! 'Coalition of the Willing' is a collaborative animated film about “an online war against global warming in a post-Copenhagen world.” Because if our unwilling world leaders won't commit to saving our planet, we will darn well have to do it ourselves, is what project initiators Knife Party and Tim Rayner must have thought. The film advocates an open source approach to the war on global warming, and aims to “bring the fight against global warming to the people.” Online activism just the way we like it! 'Coalition of the Willing' is being made by 20 collaborating artists who each animate a section of the script. Sections will be released online over a period of 6 weeks, with 4-5 film sections uploaded in biweekly batches. The first four sections are online now.

Been following Harmony Korine's career ever since I first saw his debut Gummo at the International Rotterdam Film Festival in 1997. Korine -black leather jacket, holding a can of beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other- took in the applause from the sold-out room like a pro. America's avant-garde Wunderkind is back at IFFR this year with his latest feature Trash Humpers –an ode to destruction, shot on VHS and edited on a couple of VCR's. Korine in an interview with the festival: “This specific movie was supposed to mimic a found artefact, something found buried in a ditch or floating in a Ziploc bag with blood on it, and I thought it would be nice to see it on VHS. I thought if we were doing it correctly it needed to be filled with glitches and mistakes.” Trash Humpers won him an award at CPH:DOX (Korine's insane acceptance speech is on YouTube). Also worth a watch: The Dirty Ones -a Korine-produced short by Brent Stewart on the YouTube channel of IFFR.

When the Swedish organization responsible for collecting tv licence fees needed to 'remind' the good people of Sweden to pay those darn fees, they decided to do so in a big and original way. They commissioned a no-dollars-barred customizable short web film that appeals to everyone, not just to Swedes. We like it! It's funny and well made. No wonder it went viral. This uber-original illustrator/animator from Canada is Featured User of the Week on Vimeo. Just marvelled for 12 mins. at the sheer psychedelicacy of his animated short The Astronomer's Dream. Sutherland's Vimeo page hosts no less than 47 animations, from animation tests to complete shorts in glorious HD. Most recently, in 2010, to be precise, Malcolm completed Lifeforms - “a short experimental floaty & aimless animation,” (his own words). We say: it's a bloody brilliant syneasthetic animated masterpiece. Oscar Fischinger eat your heart out!
