Hotel 626: Freak Yourself Out

News: Interactive Storytelling

Be afraid! This is hands down the best immersive, online, fictional game thingy we have seen yet. Like, ever. It maxes out on the use of interactive gimmicks which - when you think about it - seem like obvious tools for non-linear drama. We're talking web-cam (to make sure you are playing in the dark! And for chilling / thrilling visual tricks), mic (for super-creepy vocal interactivity), cell phone, and such-like to create a frenzied, nightmarish trip through the haunted hotel, cleverly customized to freak YOU the hell out. It's a gripping ride and a super-fun challenge peppered with visual shockers. FYI the patience-testing login process and upload time are totes worth it.
The shape of things to come? Let's eeking hope so!

The Making of Logorama (in French)

News: animation

Six months ago the Etappes published a superb video of the making of the Oscar-winning short on Vimeo. Very worthwhile even if you don't speak French. There are clips of the animatic and character studies. Logorama creators Ludovic Houplain, Hervé de Crécy et François Alaux of H5 discuss logos and reappropriation. Come to think of it. The Academy awarding a short that takes intellectual property reappropriation to a whole new level is no less than a major breakthrough. Hollywood acknowledges that reappropriation can actually be a good thing.

Transmedia Graphic Novel Darkness

News: Transmedia

The man behind Jawbone.tv - where non-linear dreamz are born - just shared this intrigueing oeuvre-in-the-making with us: a dark, gory and compelling crowd-powered, interactive graphic novel-type project in which you get to kill and kill again the world's deadliest killers. Keyword: kill :-) The project is *transmedia*-tastic, combining gaming, books, animation and live action in its production and distribution approach. You even get scary text messages on your phone! We strongly recommend you help make Rekill a re-ality by becoming a Facebook fan (FYI they need 1 million). Death is just the beginning apparently! And on that cheery note, here's the trailer.
Rekill, pussycat!

Check out these 3 stunning animated promos

These artists really worked their asses off to get your attention with their impressive animated music videos. Witness the meticulously constructed landscapes in the cross-country road trip of a couple of pairs of boots in Poon and Makarenko's stop-motion promo for Zeus. Or the Gorillaz-inspired animated narrative for Spanish hip-hopper El Chojin, who envisions himself as a rugged but tormented superheroe. Paul Murphy's flabbergasting line animation for The Fumes is the icing on this weeks 2Pause cake! We asked Murphy how he did it in this interview.

Magnum In Motion

News: Visual Essays

The Magnum Photo collective which harks way back to the heady 1947 Henri-Cartier Bresson heyday has hit perfect pitch with their use of digital media for Magnum In Motion. A just-released series of visual essays by some of the fearless, adrenaline-hungry photo journalists who furnish us year in year out with seminal, hair-raising visual insights from all corners of our charred humanity. With evocative oral narratives by the auteurs themselves, historical landmarks like the nuances of the civil rights struggle, pervasive and ultra-violent gang culture, or the relentless, bloody hell of occupied Iraq, take on a deeply poignant, personal depth. Could it be that simplicity - less of the widgets / gadgets / whatsits that we're seeing in web docs - make for a more immersive experience?

Good Oscar Action!

News: Academy Awards

We love that a woman finally won Best Director - kinda crazy that it has taken so very long. Other goosebumping moments were The New Tenants for short film (though we were rooting for The Door which was shot in radioactive Pripyat). And of course Logorama for best animated short (hey, we called it a month ago! Psychic? Mais oui!). Did anyone spot the Oscar statuette in the movie?

Geek Get-Together Ahoy!

News: Events

We spent yesterday growing brain cells at a post-digital geek fest about a few of our favourite things: from a fan-powered Madonna music video to bottom-up buildings in Deustchland, crowd-sourcing, collaboration and participation were the order of the day. We particularly enjoyed the illicit thrill of critiquing the speakers via Twitter as Tweets were projected in real time onto giant screens flanking said speakers! Naughty naughty (but handy for crowd-sourcing iPhone chargers in the nick of time). Back to the matter at hand though: outstanding highlights were the beautiful and inspiring Sochi project and the closing speech by cool geek and all-round special person Chris O'Shea.

Angelo Plessas: Interactive Genius Type Guy

News: Interactive Art

Ooh we love discovering blindingly brilliant talent from the fringes of interactive society! This Angelo Plessas fellow has been busily falling outside our radar for a while it seems, but we´re onto you now buster! Just loving the playful, visual bombshells of his recent works, particularly fond of the proportion/ perception wizardry of On Top of the Empire and the eyeballing clown-stix of See Me As An Angel.

Upload Cinema: YouTube at the Theatre

News: YouTube

Us SubmarineChannelers went on a little outing last night to a fancy old-school theatre, where a host in patent leather shoes and a dickie-bow took to the stage to MC through the night of YouTube selects to a packed audience of discerning, middle-aged theatre-goers. They were totally loving the sensation of watching viral favourites like the grandma vs 2-girls-one-cup reaction video, the old Thriller in Manila prison favourite, and the incredible, hair-raising buffalo safety in numbers baby rescue S.O.S in the comfort of a crowded theatre. Are these fancy YouTube en masse screenings happening elsewhere or is it just Amsterdamage?
